The Opportunity
Traditional solutions do not recognise the streaming nature of events and data that flow through the business. As a result, legacy solutions are built on a series of database queries and polling loops, each of which introduces delay and lag into the flow of information.
Confluent Kafka is the leading data streaming platform that enables businesses to treat event streams as data streams and to build solutions based on data streaming.

Our Approach
In Virgin’s case, the focus of MD2 was “Passenger Manifest”. The Confluent and Kafka solution directly affected the time it takes to get a final passenger manifest for a flight to the flight crew, required for departure.
The solution reduced this time by an average of 40 seconds, which has a material effect on how long it takes to get a flight in the air.
Project Outcomes
The new solution is easier to understand and maintain than the old SOA system, with less complex data flows and a clearer separation of responsibilities among the microservices that make up the Kafka solution.
